Acer Inc., no one's fool when it comes to competing in the notebook space, plans to enter the ebook book reader arena soon this year.

Acer executive Jim Wong, leader of the company's IT Goods division, outlined the strategy during an interview with Bloomberg at Acer's offices in Taipei.

On the eve of Apple's supposed entry into the tablet sweeps-a model that would serve e book readers as well as others-Wong also said the company will furthermore offer "hundreds" of apps online, programs that will sustain Google's Android platform, at the present running on several Acer goods, as well as handling Microsoft's Windows OS.

By July, Acer is expected to circulate an ebook reader with a 150 mm monochrome display, Mr. Wong told Bloomberg. "Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble; they are U.S.-centric. In Western Europe and Australasia we have publishers to work with, and the majority of them are subject matter owners," he said. Acer should go up against gadgets including the Kindle , Barnes & Noble Inc.'s Nook and Sony's Reader and so it will be easy to compare ebook reader models.

Acer also has the Apple "iSlate"-when it comes out-to contend with. "We're producing something, and we will observe what happens" J.T. Wang, Acer's chairman, said in the commentary. "We're sure to work moreover in a Windows world or in Google's defined OS space."
