Color Treated Diamonds

A lot of people are starting to favor the extravagant, dramatic tinted diamond gem stones over the conventional transparent, or white, diamonds. Some diamonds are uncovered in their organic colorings when they are mined, others become colored by gemologists and jewelers during a specialized process. In order to make sure they are less expensive for the average consumer, companies have begun color treating diamonds of lesser grades in order to take a less prestigious yellowish or brown tinted diamond and make it into the most beautiful, vibrant colored diamond.

Colored diamonds can be treated by the procedure known as irradiation, which uses a high heat system to enhance the color of a diamond. Other jewels can be treated by simply painting.

Fancy Colored Diamonds

While many diamonds will be inspected and valued based on their clear attributes, there are still quite a few people who choose the fancy colored diamonds which come in vivid shades of green, yellow, red, pinks and all the different colorings in between.

Some colored diamonds are that way naturally. If a diamond has nitrogen in it, it often has a yellow tint to the stone and thus will be classified as yellow diamonds. Sometimes, exposure to natural radiation causes stones to appear quite green..

For those with a smaller budget who would not ordinarily be able to afford a fancy gem, can now do so with treated diamonds which are a very attractive option. Specialist jewelers have found means to alter a gemstones color to almost any strength of shade that is desired. The grading process for colored diamonds is slightly different than that of the transparent diamond. First of all, a colored diamond is graded based on the primary hue, the blue or pink or red color that makes up the majority of the diamonds color. Secondly, they are graded based on the intensity of that color. A very intense, naturally colored diamond is more rare than a less intense diamond, and therefore more expensive. In almost every case, a natural stone will out grade an enhanced version.

Synthetic Diamonds

Most diamonds are found and mined by miners, However, it is quite possible for the diamond to be created by a scientific process. A synthetic version is still a real diamond, just created in a lab instead of the earth, and, of course, are much less valuable.

Names of The Colors

Because fancy colored diamonds come in so many different shades, it can often be difficult to interpret the name of the diamonds color. You can quite regularly see a cross referencing of color such as a "greenish blue". Each diamond color name will have a primary color attached. In our example it would be blue. If another color is mentioned with an 'ish', that would be the secondary color. Some stones have equal parts of color such as red/ brown. There is no secondary color just a perfect half and half of each. .
